MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAM OF STRUCTURE-EARTHQUAKE  ENGINEERING (WITH THESIS)

 

 

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

 

In recent years, the design of earthquake resistant structures is a subject which is being studied extensively worldwide. Almost the whole of Turkey is under the risk of earthquakes. In our country which suffers both loss of lives and properties due to earthquakes, there is a lack of educated technical staff and an interdisciplinary gap in this field. The aim of the Master Program in Structure-Earthquake Engineering is primarily to contribute to resolve this deficiency, to develop the investigation of the effects of earthquakes on structures and to train graduate students who are able to design earthquake resistant structures.

 

Average duration of study for MS degree with/without thesis is two years. The candidates are required to take at least two of the courses in the first two semesters and the seminar in the third semester. Elective courses are chosen from the available courses offered by the Civil Engineering Department and those offered by the Institute. For MS degree without thesis, term project is obligatory. Students in the program with thesis are reqauired to prepare and submit a thesis after earning 60 ECTS credits with courses in the program.

 

 

MISSION

 

Since more than 90% of our country is on the world's most active seismic regions, destructive earthquakes occur quite often, causing loss of life and property. In our country, most of the existing buildings do not have adequate earthquake resistance and there is quite a lot of buildings to be strengthened. Therefore, the construction of new earthquake-resistant structures and the repair and strengthening of existing ones against earthquakes are very important for the country's economy. Since there is a lack of trained technical staff and scientists in this field and a need for interdisciplinary studies, the mission of the Structure-Earthquake Engineering Department is to resolve the deficiency of our country in this respect and to train graduate students who are aware of the problem.

To be an institution that proves its existence with its education, research and applications and to train well-educated graduate students in the field of Structure-Earthquake Engineering.

 

 

ACQUIRED DEGREE

 

Students, who successfully complete the program, are entitled to master of science degree in Structure-Earthquake .Engineering.

 

ACQUIRED LEVEL OF QUALIFICATION

 

It is a program that provides graduate education.

RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE PROGRAM

 

Students studying master's with thesis are required:

·         To take 7 courses (21 local credits) and enroll in the Seminar course and Master’s thesis, and complete 120 ECTS. (The Seminar course and Master’s thesis do not have local credit and are assessed with a pass or fail).

·         To get at least a grade of DD in order to be successful in each course of the program,

To have 2.50 general average grade out of 4.00 on the core subjects, and are to be successful in the Seminar course and Master’s thesis defense.

 

DESCRIPTION OF PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

 

The graduate students at Maltepe University may be exempt from some courses within the framework of certain regulations. If course content from another institution is appropriate and relevant to the one in Maltepe University, the course content would be approved by the director of the institution / faculty/ college, so that the students may be exempted from this course.

 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

 

Structure-Earthquake Engineering graduate program invites students who compeleted their undergraduate degrees in civil engineering or other related undegraduate disciplines coincide with addmission requiremenets of the program. Program is proposing to raise responsible graduate students who can develop creative solutions to local, national, universal problems in the field and related disciplines, produce the necessary information and technology to society needs using the information from theoretical knowledge and research applications,

PROFESSIONAL PROFILES OF THE GRADUATES

Since the alternatives of the graduates are extensive, students who complete the requirements successfully become competent in the field of structure-earthquake engineering and have the oppurtunities in finding positions in government and private sectors as well as can obtain positions in the work-areas of research and development, quality control.

 

TRANSFER TO A HIGHER STAGE

 

Students graduating from this program can apply for admission to PhD programs in civil engineering.

 

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

 

The Graduate School of Science and Engineering in Structure-Earthquake Engineering MS program is arranged as of local 21 credits and 120 ECTS.


All of the programs of Maltepe University, as it is included in the law on Higher education, include common core courses and foreign Language courses as a second language and other common courses those that the University Senate determines. 25% of the curriculum should be formed of elective courses.

 

The Graduate School of Science and Engineering in Structure-Earthquake Engineering MS program consists of non-credit compulsory sminar course, 4 compulsory courses, 3 elective courses and 60 ECTS credits and additionally a MS thesis. Elective courses can be selected  from other related MS program as well as from undergraduate courses with a limit of 2 (two).

EXAMS, EVALUATION AND GRADING

Instructors evaluate each registered student by taking quiz, mid-term exam and final exam results, and the studies that substitute exams into consideration. As a result of the evaluation, s/he appreciates one of the grades below as the student's final grade.

AA, BA, BB, CB and CC mean that the course has been completed successfully. DC and DD grades show that the course has been completed successfully providing that the student has fulfilled the requirements depending on grade average point which was specified in the regulations. Grade F shows that the student has been unsuccessful. Even if the grade average point of a student who has got an F grade is enough to be considered as successful, this course is retaken.

 

Special condition of students in a course is shown with the letters below:

 BI   (successful)

Student has succeeded in a course without credit or in one that is not included in the average.

BZ  (unsuccessful)

Student has been unsuccessful in a course without credit or in one that is not included in the average.

EK   (incomplete)

In a condition of incompleteness resulting from the student, the instructor takes valid excuses into consideration and wants that student to compensate those imperfections. Providing that the imperfections are not compensated maximum in two weeks after passing grades are announced, the mark of incomplete, changes to an F grade.                         

ÇK  (dropped)

Student has dropped the course.

DZ  (unattended)

Student has not fulfilled attendance requirements. (Absenteeism is regarded as an F grade while the averages are calculated)

MU (exempt)

Student has been exempted according to these regulations.

TK (retaken)

The course has been retaken due to failure.

İZ  (permitted)

Student is permitted according to regulations

TF (transfer)

Equivalent courses which the student took and succeeded in other higher education institutions, in another institute or in the previous program and which have been recognized in the current undergraduate transfer program.

ÖZ  

Student has the status of special student.

 

 

 

Successful Students

Students are regarded as successful according to their General Average Grade. In order to be admitted as successful, students have to have 2.50 General Average Grade in a Master's program and 3.00 General Average Grade in a PhD program.

 

Students who graduate from their departments or complete their programs with 3.50-4.00 General Average Grade are appreciated as University high honor students and they are on the list of University Honor Students List.
